Sure to be a popular renter, which is not to say that this ranks with the best of the Muppets. There's too much Gonzo and Rizzo the Rat, while the ocean-liner pacing, leaden gags and uninspired musical numbers anchor the movie down. But Tim Curry, as "professional pirate" Long John Silver, manages to keep things afloat, and Kermit and Miss Piggy have a sweet duet, "Love Brought Us Here." This being a Muppet movie, "here" is tied together by the ankles, dangling over a cliff. An "Absolutely Fabulous" Jennifer Saunders and comedian Billy Connelly contribute memorable cameos with gusto. Optional. (K. Lee Benson)[DVD Review—Nov. 29, 2005—Walt Disney, 100 min., G, $19.99—Making its second appearance on DVD, 1996's Muppet Treasure Island boasts clean widescreen and full screen transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. DVD extras include “Pepe Profiles Presents—Fozzie Bear: A Long Day's Journey Into Night Clubs” (6 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: not one of the Muppets' best efforts, with a disappointing extras package to boot.]
