In the days just prior to an international fashion show in Manhattan, a number of movers and shakers in haute couture face a variety of personal crises. Lorenzo (Paul Sorvino), a titan in the industry, reveals that he is dying and tends to unfinished business with his son (Michael Sorvino), ex-wife (Sonia Braga), and longtime companion (Peter Gallagher). A top photographer (Jared Harris) faces the twin collapse of his marriage and professional confidence. A progressive designer (Rita Wilson) sees her business partner (Leslie Mann) leave for a rival firm and an ambivalent romance with an eerie neurotic (Jeff Goldblum). With all this action and conflict, one might expect this film to have been carefully scripted in every detail. In fact, director Michael Rymer and screenwriter L.M. Kit Carson wrote a detailed outline for Perfume and in-depth background sketches for all the characters--but then allowed a superb, skilled cast to improvise all the dialogue used in the film. More than just a cinematic experiment, Perfume is a collection of unusually soulful performances. Recommended. (T. Keogh)
