Emily Hubley, daughter of animators Faith and John Hubley, is an inventive and thought-provoking animator in her own right (her work was recently prominently featured in John Cameron Mitchell's indie hit Hedwig and the Angry Inch). Pigeon (and more) Within collects several of Hubley's eccentric and unfailingly eye-catching animated shorts, proving that as a storyteller she can be brilliant (“Pigeon Within,” “One Self: Fish/Girl”) and also obscure (“The Tower”). A surface-obsessed artist with a flair for abstraction, her work approaches cubism at times, but even in more benign representational contexts, Hubley's films are challenging. Featuring many of her best and most adventuresome short films, this is strongly recommended for art students and collections that include avant-garde animation. Aud: C, P. (P. Van Vleck)
