One of the year's most unorthodox films is also one of its most acclaimed and controversial. This international film festival award-winning drama stars Linus Roache as Father Greg, a young cleric assigned to a Liverpool parish where he clashes instantly with his more lenient colleague. He suffers a crisis of conscience when one of his parishioners, a 14-year-old girl, confesses that her father is sexually abusing her. Should he break the seal of the confessional? He also wrestles with his forbidden desires: he is gay. Superbly acted, Priest's religious and moral dilemmas make for powerful drama. Despite this film's lightning-rod reputation, it is more an attack on hypocrisy than on religion. (D. Liebenson)
