As Not Another Teen Movie so graphically illustrated, the teen movie genre has become something of a joke, so it does the heart good to revisit this 1989 classic that marked the directorial debut of Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous). John Cusack stars as Everyteen Lloyd Dobler, who finds himself in an unlikely romance with brainy beauty Diane Court (Ione Skye). Lloyd, fresh out of high school, has no formed ambitions other than kickboxing and "hanging" with Diane, much to the displeasure of Diane's father (a superb John Mahoney), with whom she has a pact that they can say anything to each other (but not, as she will learn, everything). An unabashedly romantic comedy that remembers the pangs of first true love, Say Anything also sports one of the iconic moments in contemporary cinema, as a broken-hearted Lloyd blasts Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" from his boom box outside Diane's window. This DVD boasts a wealth of special features, including truly enhancing commentary by Crowe, Cusack and Skye; a "making of"; and deleted, extended, and alternate scenes. Highly recommended.
