Adapted from Sam Shepard's play about betrayal, blackmail, and a horse racing scam that haunts its conspirators for 20 years, Simpatico gets by for a while on its tense, brutal, benumbed performances. Nick Nolte, Jeff Bridges and Sharon Stone are brilliantly volatile as a former threesome whose psyches were battered in very personal ways by the big scheme that didn't go as planned, leaving one of them destitute and broken-hearted, and the others rich, hollow and raw. But in the hands of first-time screen director Matthew Warchus, the picture leaves motives in question and depths unexplored, particularly in the cumbersome and maddeningly imprecise details of downtrodden Nolte's plan to switch places with Bridges, who years ago stole Stone from him and became a wealthy horse breeder. Optional. (R. Blackwelder)
