Based on a true story, and set in France during the 1930s, this tale of a pair of sisters who serve as housemaids and carry on an incestuous relationship is really enlivened by yet another wonderful performance by Julie Walters, here playing the domineering mistress of the house. The tension between Walters and her wallflower daughter is far more interesting than the one-note acting of the girls in love. (R. Pitman)[DVD Review--May 18, 2004--Koch Lorber, 85 min., not rated, $29.95--Making its debut on DVD, Nancy Meckler's 1994 Sister My Sister benefits little from the new format, since it's presented on a more or less extra-less disc in a full screen version (as opposed to its original 1:85:1 ratio) with a transfer that is disappointingly soft, grainy, and often dark. Bottom line: a better (and better-looking) version of this story to consider would be Murderous Maids (VL-11/03).]
