Set in Brooklyn, the pleasantly ambling plot of this collaboration between writer Paul Auster and director Wayne Wang links a cigar shop owner (Harvey Keitel), a depressed and grieving novelist (William Hurt) and a black teenager whom Hurt saves from becoming roadkill. That intercession sets in motion a series of chain reactions (not the least of which is the incessant chain-smoking by characters throughout the film) that are as much fun for the audience to discover as the characters. Easily one of the best films of the year. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. (R. Pitman)
