No Hollywood formula remains tried and true once cult darling Kathryn Bigelow (Near Dark, Blue Steel, Point Break) gets through with it. This subversive sci-fi film parties like it's 1999. In the last 48 hrs. of the 20th century, lowlife Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes) hawks on the black market virtual reality digital clips that allow the user to re-live raw human experience. He comes into possession of a volatile clip (the murder of a rap superstar by rogue police) that could start a war in gang-infested, racially-divided Los Angeles. As with all of Bigelow's films, this one's viscerally exhilarating, but the conspiracy-mystery aspect is lacking. Juliette Lewis plays a singer who makes Courtney Love look like Debby Boone. An optional purchase. (D. Liebenson)
