When NYC college prof Charles Bigelow (Paul Le Mat) goes looking for his missing wife (Diana Scarwid) in her small Illinois hometown, he discovers that aliens--in the guise of its inhabitants--took over 25 years ago. Along with a ditzy tabloid reporter (Nancy Allen), Bigelow works to foil their (inexplicable) plan to abduct his daughter. With its cheesy special effects and tongue-in-cheek references to early sci-fi movie clichés, Strange Invaders clearly wanted to be a spoof of the endearing “saucer flick” genre, but falls considerably short. Although marred by a mediocre transfer from a somewhat worn film print, the disc does benefit from audio commentary from director Michael Laughlin and screenwriter Bill Condon, whose remarks are often more entertaining than their exceedingly modest 1983 movie. Definitely optional. (T. Rich)
