If there were such a genre as feel-good noir, this would certainly be on the top of the list. Cheerful deception is the name of the game when a penniless con artist (Peter Dobson) rolls into town--just in time to help a pretty woman (Lara Flynn Boyle) steal $65,000 from her husband. Soon, the local gardener (Danny Nucci), the church, and the whole town become involved in the scheme. Written and directed by Marcus De Leon, The Big Squeeze is zany and offbeat, providing some enjoyable setups and payoffs. The film is undone, however, by the ending, in which God plays the final hand in kind of a sappy tribute to faith (while milking the most out of a sight gag). Optional. (L. Russo)
