Fans of the original French comedy La Cage Aux Folles (1978) will find this remake from the re-teamed screenwriter Elaine May and director Mike Nichols not quite two-snaps-with-a-double-twist-up. Still, make no mistake, The Birdcage is loads of fun: gay nightclub owners Robin Williams and Nathan Lane star as the parents of a young man who has set his sights on the daughter of a high-ranking Republican official (Gene Hackman) whose nose is decidedly blue. Sure to be popular. Enthusiastically recommended. (R. Pitman)[Blu-ray Review—July 1, 2014—Fox, 119 min., R, $19.99—Making its first appearance on Blu-ray, 1996's The Birdcage features a decent transfer and a DTS-HD 5.1 soundtrack. Extras include a theatrical trailer. Bottom line: this entertaining remake makes a welcome debut on Blu-ray.]
