A brooding, fatalistic drama, written and directed by maverick Sean Penn, and starring his hipster saint Jack Nicholson as a man volcanic with rage and obsessed with killing the drunk driver (David Morse) who ran down his daughter. What gives this film an undeniable emotional charge is the casting of Nicholson and Anjelica Huston. Their real-life, bitter breakup can't help but resonate in their scenes. Recommended. (K. Benson)
