That this dopey David Schwimmer vehicle is being peddled as a comedy is a joke in itself. The Pallbearer is a depressing movie about a no-life loser (Schwimmer) who can't get a job or a girlfriend, and treats his mother (Carol Kane) like an annoying mosquito. He deceives some dead guy's mother (Barbara Hershey), sleeps with her, and then tries to finagle a date with his dream girl (Gwyneth Paltrow), all while avoiding personal responsibility. After being such a jerk, this guy has the nerve to whine and complain when things don't go his way. The Pallbearer not only lacks wit--it's missing wisdom, truth, and entertainment value. Anyone expecting to see Friends at a funeral home will be sorely disappointed. (L. Russo)
