The big chill, know what I'm sayin'? This hip-hopumentary, part concert film, part interview jam session endeavors to give rap music its props, but it basically preaches to the converted. "The Show" itself, held last December in Philadelphia, features performances by Notorious B.I.G., Naughty By Nature and Wu-Tang Clan. Interviews range from the posturing of Snoop Doggy Dogg to the sobering jailhouse encounter with Slick Rick, a former top draw now serving time for attempted murder. For a less reverent view of rap music, check out Fear of a Black Hat, a "mockumentary." Libraries may want to consider The Show, since there is nothing else like it available on the market. (K. Benson)[DVD Review--July 13, 2004--Columbia TriStar, 93 min., not rated, $24.95--Making its debut on DVD, the 1995 concert/profile The Show sports an undistinguished non-anamorphic widescreen transfer, backed by a somewhat muddy Dolby Digital surround soundtrack (a 5.1 and/or DTS remix would have been nice), and no extras. Bottom line: now more of a historical record than a solid film--and given less-than-sterling treatment for its DVD release--this is still a very optional purchase on DVD.]

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
