Like Roberto Benigni, but much less known on North American shores, director Nanni Moretti is cherished in Italy as a comic filmmaker. But like Life is Beautiful, this wrenching drama that earned him top honors at the Cannes Film Festival is a devastating departure. Moretti stars as a psychiatrist whose son, Andrea, perishes in a diving accident, prompting the ties that bind this close-knit family to inexorably unravel, as each surviving family member struggles to cope…until a letter from a girl whom the son recently met offers the family a last, best chance to move on with their lives. Superbly acted and profoundly moving, this understated film is universal in its intimately observed meditation on a family's desperate search for closure in the wake of unbearable tragedy. Highly recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
