Expect the expected in this plodding black 'comedy' that pits crook against crook, and audience against the Sandman. Alec Baldwin stars as Mackin, a career crook and vinyl fetishist (classic LP's, that is), who gets double crossed while pulling a caper for local gangster and 'best French restaurateur in Detroit' Pointy Williams (Michael Jai White). This backstabbing takes place in the very first act, with the rest of this indie actioner playing itself out as an extended grudge match between Mackin and Pointy. Along for the ride are Rebecca De Mornay, who sleepwalks through her role as a Detroit detective investigating the pair, André Braugher, as Pointy's henchman, and Janeane Garofalo, whose screen time could only be clocked with a swift stopwatch. To give him some credit, director and co-scripter Scott Sanders does turn a wry phrase now and then, but not nearly often enough to recommend this unremarkable direct-to-video fare. (S. C. Sickles)
