Enigmatic drifter Patrick Swayze and his shape-shifting canine companion bring magic to Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (whose husband is M.I.A. in the Korean War) and her two sons, one who is bad at baseball, and the younger who is always afraid. A well-intentioned family film, but it throws in everything but a bicycle ride across the moon. Swayze's character is (take your pick) a bearded beatnik who shocks the locals by parading in the buff, a legendary former rookie phenomenon who teaches a misfit little league team the practice of Zen, an angel or a ghost. Not recommended. (K. Benson)
