This Bull Durham on the golf course once again pairs writer/director Ron Shelton and Mr. Catatonic, Kevin Costner, in a tired story about a washed-up driving range instructor named Roy McAvoy who decides to explore his full potential by qualifying for and playing in the U.S. Open. As the love interest, Rene Russo is perfect(ly bland). Predictable to an 18th hole tee, Tin Cup will appeal primarily to non-discriminating Costner fans (excuse the redundancy) and weekend duffers. But you know a film's in big trouble when you start actually looking forward to the Don Johnson scenes (Costner's old buddy turned golf nemesis). Although it's embarrassing to admit, Adam Sandler did this better and funnier in Happy Gilmore. Not a necessary purchase. (R. Pitman)
