Buy the 1938 film starring Tom Kelly. Or the 1973 musical starring Johnnie Whitaker and Jodie Foster. Better yet, stage a public reading. Distribute the Cliff Notes. But don't let this be anyone's first exposure to Mark Twain's classic book. Sitcom-trained Jonathan Taylor Thomas is clueless as Tom Sawyer and director Peter Hewitt makes a botch of even such a surefire bit as the whitewash episode. Not recommended, but as with It Takes Two, the price is right, and Thomas, of Home Improvement, is popular with the Sassy set. (K. Benson)
