Jim Fall's bright, funny and frisky film is one of those rare gay romantic comedies that passes the "straight test": i.e., would anyone pay the slightest attention to the story if the principal characters were a man and a woman? Trick not only passes with flying colors, it makes most "straight" romantic comedies look positively inept by comparison. The story centers on Gabriel (Christian Campbell, brother of Neve), a nice young man who thinks that all he's looking for is a one-nighter with a handsome hunk...until he actually finds a handsome hunk (J. P. Pitoc) and can't find a place to spend the night. Though the script occasionally falls back on drag shows and bitchy queens, the film rarely stumbles as pure comedy. Even Tori Spelling is a comic revelation as Gabriel's blissfully self-absorbed gal pal. Effortlessly charming, this is recommended. (S. Renshaw)
