Through the eyes of four teens, French filmmaker Andre Téchiné leisurely explores a country divided by war and hatred. In the southwest of France during 1962, Francois (Gael Morel) struggles with his homosexuality, Maite (Elodie Bouchez) fights her growing attraction to her political enemy Henri (Frédéric Gorny), and Serge (Stéphane Rideau) must deal with the hypocrisy of war when his brother is killed. Téchiné brilliantly uses the coming-of-age premise to slowly reveal the world's harshness, as it shreds the remains of his characters' innocence. Heartfelt performances and beautiful cinematography complement the film's touching narrative. Winner of four César awards, Wild Reeds should not be missed. Editor's Choice. (L. Russo)
