Hank (Lucca De Oliveira) has a problem. Well… he has a lot of problems. His biggest problem is alcoholism, the addiction fueling many other problems in his life. He works as an enforcer for a crime-connected loan shark but he’s trying to find a way out. Hank’s handler, Harper (Geordie Kieffer) keeps a close eye on him and makes sure he “stays wet” by forcing him to drink.
Despite this, Hank makes his way to an AA meeting. There he meets Lucy (Elyse Mirto), the leader of the group. At a bar, he asks her advice on quitting. She gives some esoteric yet powerful advice about choice. The next day, Hank and Harper make their way to Lucy’s house. She owes their boss a hefty sum in gambling debts. Will Hank have the power to escape the cycle of violence and addiction, or will his primal drives take over again?
You’re Now Beyond Hope, Arizona is a striking short film and an excellent crime story. Those looking for a gritty crime thriller will be very pleased with You’re Now Beyond Hope, Arizona. The story is surprisingly deep and clever for the short runtime. My only complaint is that I wish this was a feature film. There’s almost enough here for a solid hour of worldbuilding and character development as the film exists.
Director and writer Nick Dungan leaves the viewer begging for more as the credits roll. His eye for suspenseful camera work really shines throughout the film, giving glimpses of famous crime movies and series without relying on homage. The characters hint at a deeper storyline with their rapid-fire characterization and well-acted performances.
Those seeking a gritty, gut-wrenching crime story without too much in-your-face violence should be directed toward You’re Now Beyond Hope, Arizona. Highly Recommended.
