Just like an exercise or medical title, Fret MD opens with a disclaimer warning of the risks involved in serious guitar setup (even requiring viewers to click on an “I Agree” button before the program will play!). So, what sort of powder-keg lies within? Viewers will learn an expert method of guitar setup, best suited for intermediate to advanced players, especially those who are gigging and don't have a roadie to keep their axes in prime condition night after night. And it's true that one false move (especially in the area of truss rod adjustment) could cause expensive—perhaps irreparable—damage that may not be a huge risk for a $100 instrument, but should certainly be a consideration before approaching a vintage Les Paul or Stratocaster. Master luthier Al Markasky, owner of Sylvan Music in Santa Cruz, CA, demonstrates here a five-step method developed over 30 years of experience, involving proper truss rod adjustment for a straight neck, nut adjustment, setting the action (string height) and intonation (string length), and determining the optimum pickup height (cleaning techniques are also covered here). Featuring excellent instruction and solid close-ups, Fret MD will be just what the doctor ordered for both serious and budget-conscious guitarists. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (C. Block)
