Using on-screen comments by various job placement managers, corporate human services directors and job seekers (a free-lance composer and actor--unconventional jobs to say the least!), this video discusses the ten criteria for getting a job in today's competitive marketplace. Education, computer skills and networking, knowing where jobs are and aren't, reaching employers, interviewing successfully, and other topics are presented in brief 1-2 minute segments. People on-screen are identified by name and position but not affiliated with any organizations (except for Marshall University, where?); therefore, credibility is not established. While this is not another video on interview techniques (thank goodness!), the interview segment is much longer than the other segments. Common-sense advice like "get a good education" or "upgrade your education" is mixed with substantive material such as mentioning specific fields that will be growing in the near future and how to ask questions of your prospective employer. Most disappointing were the segments covering education, computer skills, networking, and moving within a company, which provided little or no usable information on the topics. It might find some usefulness in high school vo-tech programs, but there are many high quality books which cover this material much better. An optional purchase at best. (J. Scholtz)
