Two new videos try to help aspiring artists get a leg up in their art careers. The first, 5 Steps to Get Your Art in a Gallery, is hosted by Jennifer Gilbert, owner of de Havilland Fine Art Gallery, and her partner Christopher Long. Together, they present an insider's bag of tricks for marketing your art. The five steps outlined are: 1) locating and selecting target galleries 2) the five components of assembling an outstanding portfolio, 3) introducing yourself to a gallery; 4) showing your work to a gallery; and 5) expanding your market. The information provided in the program is reasonable, but the videos appear to have been done on the cheap (indicated by the nasty glitches between takes). A second volume, 3 Steps to Sell Your Art on Your Own, is also available (both can be purchased for the series price of $58.95). An optional purchase. Aud: C, P. Sylvia White: Managing Your Art Career offers more bang for your buck. This is a workshop presentation designed to get artists to spend time--on a regular basis--"doing the business of your career." The main focus here is what you need to do to prepare yourself and your work for 4 outlets: private commercial galleries, non-profit galleries, private art consultants and juried shows and competitions. Sylvia White is dynamic and convincing and the video provides a wealth of information from how to shake hands with a gallery owner to the financial and legal realities of taking charge of your career. To reinforce the content, an information packet of tips, sample documents, bibliographies, and contacts is included. The program concludes with a brief and tasteful description of Sylvia White's consultation and management services. Invaluable for anyone launching a fine-arts career. Highly recommended. Aud: C, P.
