Dr. Thomas W. Phelan, who developed the 1-2-3 Magic program (reviewed in our January, 1991 issue), returns with another spirited and informative lecture on a problem which afflicts an estimated 20 million people in the United States: ADD, or Attention-Deficit Disorder. Although the syndrome has had many different labels over the past century (most notably, "hyperactivity" in our own time), the symptoms have remained fairly constant. Children who are inattentive, disorganized, impulsive, impatient, emotionally intense, and have extreme difficulty with the peers in their social circle are likely candidates for the diagnosis. In Part I, Dr. Phelan outlines the eight most prominent symptoms; the effects of ADD on home, school, and social life; the developmental course of the syndrome from toddler to adult; prognostic indicators which may help offset the ADD symptoms; and what is known concerning the causes of ADD. Part II addresses the diagnosis of ADD, and discusses various tools, ranging from counseling to medication, which are used to treat ADD. Interspersed throughout Phelan's lectures are testimonials from parents, educators, and children about their experiences with ADD. Dr. Phelan is an accomplished lecturer and his comments concerning ADD are both perceptive and informed. With the attendant interest surrounding books on ADD, this two-video set will be very popular. Highly recommended. (Available from: Child Management, 800 Roosevelt Rd., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137; 1-800-44-CHILD, as well as other distributors.)
