Although there are a number of incredibly powerful consumer video editing applications on the market, many pros prefer Avid editing suites and/or software, which generally cost much more. Although Avid has a stronghold in professional desktop video production, the company sees a burgeoning world of multimedia made possible by high-bandwidth Internet connections and is increasingly targeting high-end consumer/low-end professionals with comparatively lower-cost but high-performing video editors such as Avid's Xpress DV (retail: $695) and Xpress Pro (retail: $1,695). Host Steve Bayes (former product designer for Avid and author of The Avid Handbook) takes viewers through the essential baby steps in capturing, editing, and outputting a piece in Avid Editing Essentials, the opening title in a four-part series. Combining excellent screenshots that illustrate the precise ways to perform various tasks, together with Bayes' user-friendly and logically arranged guidance, this workshop-on-a-disc would be a solid addition to high school, academic, and adult education collections where video production is taught, as well as larger public libraries. The other programs in the series (series price: $249.95) are: Workflow and Media Management, Advanced Editing Techniques, and Special Effects and Color Correction. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P.
