Sign language for babies is quite the trend in parenting circles, thanks in part to extensive promotion as well as word-of-mouth. Both Joseph Garcia's Sign with Your Baby (VL-1/02) and this program aim to teach pre-verbal children simple sign language so they can communicate their needs. While both videos discuss the benefits of signing, Baby Signs is particularly entertaining for babies to watch with its mix of animation, live action costumed children, stock film footage, and pleasant musical accompaniment. On the other hand, this program only features 30 signs, not all of which are pure American Sign Language, while the more comprehensive Garcia tape includes a “dictionary” of 147 ASL signs covering just about any infant/toddler need. Still, due to popular demand, most public libraries will want to have at least one copy of each. Recommended. Aud: P. (R. Reagan)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
