Both of these programs aim to prepare new car buyers before they lose money hand over fist to the car dealer. Buying a New Car for Less, hosted by Paul Rosa, is a jam-packed no-nonsense guide to choosing the right car, choosing the right dealer, leasing vs. purchasing, buying new or used, financing, and selling your used car. In addition to the basics, Rosa discusses various dealer games and rip-offs, such as loss-leaders, lowballing, and those questionable extras (stain protection, for instance). The Car Buyer's Guide, on the other hand, goes for entertainment over information, with long, and rather tedious playlets showing viewers the right and wrong ways to deal with the car dealer. Some good points are made, but they're buried amidst a virtually endless haggling session--with a couple of the dumbest consumers to ever carry a checkbook, and a pair of car dealers that wouldn't last ten minutes in the big leagues. On the plus side, The Car Buyer's Guide comes with the book it is based upon. This 182-page manual is loaded with usable information--very little of which made it into the video. The first title is highly recommended, the second video is not.
