Artist Henry Mead is the excellent instructor for this video series on the basics of throwing clay and making functional pottery. In Throwing on the Wheel, Mead discusses the basic tools of the trade: a potter's wheel, sponges, wire, and ribs for smoothing; gives an in-depth demonstration of the tricky process of wedging the clay; and then proceeds to make a cylinder (which eventually becomes a pitcher with spout and handle) showing viewers how to center, spread, shape, and trim the clay. In Part 1 of Throwing Functional Pottery, Mead makes a dinner plate (taking particular care to smooth out the bottom "as a gesture of friendship to your dining room table") and a casserole dish. And in Part 2, Mead creates a lovely teapot and a square bowl. Excellent close-ups and informed instruction make all three of these programs easy to follow and accessible to anyone with a yen to work with clay. The fact that Mead's creations are also useable is a refreshing change of pace from the regular coffee table craft projects that dominate similar fare. All three titles are highly recommended.
