New age, new methods. The idea of using flashcards to enhance retention of basic memory-based skills is a time-honored tradition. And, to some extent, the idea transfers well to video. Using a straightforward approach, the Addition program shows viewers the addition process from ground level (0 + 0 = 0) up to double digits (10 + 10 = 20). In the second part of the program, the problems are shown sequentially, and the answers given after a pause. The final section of the program flashes the entire series of problems in random order. For the rote learning of basic math, these flash card videos will indeed help the self-achieving child with a desire to learn. The Spell Well series, however, is another story. Though the neverending list of exceptions to the rules for spelling English words does require some rote learning, the random flashing of unrelated words is not the best method for learning our mother tongue. In the tape, a series of words are presented ("ambition, answered, accidentally, developed", etc.) followed by strange pairings ("accidentally answered") which viewers are then asked to spell. Since there is no attention paid to the principles of language, this arbitrary list of words is of dubious teaching value. The mathematics series are recommended, but we cannot recommend the spelling series. (Available from most distributors.)
