In Volume III of the Foundations in Health Series (see Come See About Medicines [VL -10/96]), the unflappable Dr. Scott and her pal, 11-year-old Julia, learn important lessons about vaccines, bacteria, viruses, hygiene, and a host of other topics. They're joined by the wacky-yet-not-cheesy Dr. Pancreas, whose nose they accidentally get blown into. A Mission: Impossible-style format keeps things interesting and the "Guess What?" segments, in which Dr. Pancreas poses pop-quiz questions, make the video delightfully interactive. Clever edits, creative shooting, fun graphics, upbeat music, and an intelligent script make this a winner. Potentially boring health issues are transformed into entertainment that never sacrifices educational content. The accompanying teacher's guide and curriculum is also excellent, with two sets of materials aimed at grades 3-5 and 6-8. Highly recommended. Aud: E, I, J. (E. Gieschen)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
