The proliferation of camcorders has coincided with the release of many single-volume and multi-volume video guides for enthusiasts. I watched the opening tape of this comprehensive 5-part series, which covered the basics of camcorder operation, offering plenty of actual examples of do's (use a tripod whenever possible) and don'ts (watch those fast zooms and quick pans) that would benefit any amateur camcorder operator. The 92 minutes of the first tape could have been reduced significantly, however, by cutting out a lot of the cute chatter between the two program hosts. Divided into sections, with the hosts informing viewers to turn off the VCR and complete an exercise described in an accompanying booklet, the program offered more detail than most introductions; for instance, the video pointed out the variety of batteries available and how they differ from each other. With the caveat that the presentation of the information is less than captivating, there's a lot to learn in this video camcorder course and it's a worthwhile addition for larger public library collections. Recommended. Those looking for a single-volume introduction might want to try Home Video Hits: Great Ideas for Creating Better Home Videos (VL-1/97). Aud: P. (J. Carlson)
