What's the difference between a globe and a map? What's that funny spiky circle which surrounds the letter "N" on maps? What are your city's coordinates...wait, what's a coordinate? The answers can be found in this solid introduction to map-reading skills, narrated and presented by kids. Viewers will learn about compass reading, latitude and longitude, scale, symbols, map varieties and lots more. Used alone, the video is rather bare-bones; simply introducing vocabulary and ideas, and relying on the accompanying material for reinforcement. However, when used as suggested (view in three segments, use correspondent worksheets in between), this is a very good supplement for a map skills unit. A companion volume, All About Globes, is also available. Recommended. Aud: E, I, J. (E. Gieschen)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
