The subtitle of Introduction to Research might seem a little presumptuous were it not for the fact that more than the lion's share of subject indexes available are put out by H.W. Wilson Co. Filmed at the Rider College Library, these two programs are aimed at introductory college students. Discovering the College Library uses the framing device of a pair of students (one knowledgeable, the other not) named Nina and Stewart who need to use the library for doing a research paper. Stewart, the virtual babe in the library woods, receives guidance from the reference librarian on how to use the online catalog, an introduction to LC and Dewey classification systems, periodical searches (a notable omission here is the non-Wilson product InfoTrac), using microfilm and microfiche, and CD-ROM. Except for the fact that no non-Wilson products are mentioned, Discovering the College Library is a good introduction to using the college library. Introduction to Research: Using Subject Indexes From Wilson is as good as its title, briefly addressing the importance of subject indexes before launching into the various volumes offered by Wilson. Some 14 subject indexes are covered in detail, ranging from the standard Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature to the less well-known Art Index. College libraries will surely want these nicely produced tapes, and public libraries without similar fare will want to consider. Recommended. (Available from: H.W.
