Host Jim Meuninck is the amiable narrator/field guide to this encyclopedic look at over a hundred useful wild herbs. Although some attention is paid to the medicinal qualities ascribed to various herbs, Meuninck and his co-author Dr. Jim Duke, are primarily interested in tasty foodstuffs that viewers can find in the wild and/or grow in their own backyards. Each plant is shown close-up (often from several different angles); its culinary properties are discussed (and an on the spot recipe given occasionally); and, suggestions are given for fording and/or harvesting the plant. Throughout, Meuninck stresses the similarities between some edible plants and others which are poisonous. He often cautions viewers as to which plants are best sought after in the company of a trained botanist. But many are just fine for the adventurous chef who might want to have a go at cattail pancakes, mulberry fudge, or thistle tea. And these guys are into their research (Dr. Duke once ate 100 dandelions a day for a week to see if he would turn yellow; he didn't). Another plus is the constant reference to helpful books that viewers might turn to for more information. The tape concludes with good advice on foraging rules, and a great tune. Highly recommended.
