An excellent, informative program on what to expect during baby's first year, First Year Milestones consists of two volumes (“Volume 1: Birth to 6 Months” and “Volume 2: 7 to 12 Months,” presented together on the DVD), each subdivided into chapters corresponding to every month within a year, with an introduction and summary for each three-month period, during which a narrator explains what milestones can be expected. Viewers will see babies (and their doting parents) demonstrate these milestones: for example, in the fourth month we watch a baby girl roll over, while at 12 months a baby boy is learning to put things together and take them apart. In and around these happy scenes, the parents express their thoughts and share their delights about specific behaviors in brief interview clips. As the term “milestone” might cause anxiety in new parents, the film carefully emphasizes that babies develop at different rates and then draws a clear distinction between babies who simply may not be ready for a specific behavior and legitimate signs of developmental delay. Ultimately, the film succeeds on two important levels: 1) given all the extra fear and doubt present during parents' first year, the collective enthusiasm of the subjects here—a racially diverse group from various socioeconomic levels—makes them important role models for viewing parents-to-be, and 2) it's reassuring to actually witness what constitutes those milestones, as well as see so many happy babies engaged in the act of reaching one. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (A. Cantú)
