Targeted at middle and high school students, this five-volume set from the ABC News Classroom Edition series--which provides concise, instructive outlines on a wide range of topics--focuses on terrorism: its origins, tools, and tactics. Volume one, "Perspectives," examines the roots of terrorism, tracing its historical evolution from religious fundamentalism, and defining it as an attempt to use force or violence to intimidate those with different beliefs--whether religious, social, or political. Volume two, "The Tools of Terrorism," looks at the wide range of terrorist activities, from assassinations and hijackings to suicide bombings and nerve gas attacks, while the third volume, "Israel, A Case Study" specifically addresses the Arab-Israeli conflict. Volume four, "The Rise of Modern Terrorism," explores terrorism--particularly towards Americans abroad--from the Iranian hostage situation during President Carter's administration to the U.S.S. Cole bombing. The final volume, "Terrorism in the United States," provides a brief overview of terrorism within the U.S., from KKK lynchings to the 9/11 attacks. A fast-paced series that does an excellent job of helping students understand the relevance of world events in their lives, this would also benefit college students and adults desiring a quick introduction to this ripped-from-the-headlines topic.
