On the subject of pruning roses, the host John E. Bryan says simply: "Don't be frightened by it." Bryan, a graduate of the Royal Botanic Society, is a congenial, burly man, who confidently lumbers through the garden-whether it be a bed of roses, or a square of greens-espousing simple wisdom and good advice with a rugged can-do attitude. It's infectious. In Growing Roses, Bryan gives a brief delightful history of the rose, and then shows viewers how to buy, plant, feed, prune, and cut roses, as well as how to deal with the common diseases roses are subject to. In Salad Days, Bryan grabs a shovel and rake, heads for the garden, and demonstrates how to prepare a garden bed; hoe rows; plant radishes, lettuce, peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and zucchini; and water, thin, and rotate your crops. And, of course, how to harvest a yummy salad as payment for your hard-working efforts. Originally broadcast on KQED in San Francisco, these programs are both highly recommended. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
