Science shows have come a long way from the days when a couple of sedate children dressed in their Sunday best looked on with awe as Mr. Wizard made a table-top volcano erupt. In fact, the middleman has been entirely eliminated in Get Real, Get Scientific!--kids host this razzle dazzle series of science programs produced by Wisconsin Public Television. We get the physics of motocross, ski jumping, ice skating, kayaking, and bike racing. This is followed by a segment on Space Camp, the place where spacepersons-to-be get a taste of the rigorous astronautics training program. As one might suspect from a PBS effort, this is a high end show. The on-screen talent is professional caliber, sound and video are first rate (enhanced by a heap of post-production image manipulation), and the pace rockets along with the speed of a theme park ride. But do the kids who experience this really learn anything? Or is the net result like a perfectly thrown flat stone skipping across the surface of a pond? One can only hope. Recommended. Get Real, Get Scientific!, Vol. 2 is also available. Aud: E, I, J, P. (E. Swanson)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
