Combining basic color theory, art history, and painting techniques into a fun, practical program, Getting My Start in Art! features a hip, energetic young host who guides viewers through the major works of four representative artists: Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, and Georgia O'Keeffe. While discussing each artist's style (with additional commentary from elementary-aged kids), the program intercuts scenes of an elementary art teacher leading a class in art projects (montages that can seem a bit long, especially when the viewer is seeing just faces of the students and not their work). Fortunately, the practical instruction in helping kids interpret major works and genres for themselves--an invaluable skill that takes the intimidation out of art and replaces it with confident creativity--outweighs the occasional sluggish sequence.
