World champion ice skaters Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner are the instructors in this informative, fun, and fast-paced guide to ice skating. Beginning with the basics, a group of beginners are shown what to look for in a good pair of skates, and then taken onto the ice for lessons in balancing, dipping, forward stroking, making the curve, forward crossover, stopping, and the all-important proper method for falling. Olympics skating coach John Nicks also delivers safety tips and suggestions. With each new step learned, viewers are shown footage of world-class skaters doing the same basic move (albeit, in a much more complex routine). The second half of the program is devoted to backwards skating, with the closing section on skating for beauty offering a few fancy maneuvers. This is an excellent instructional video, featuring solid camerawork, slow-motion and repetition when it's needed, a witty yet solid script, and two very pleasant instructors. Highly recommended.
