Although figures vary, it is estimated that some 27 million American adults are functionally illiterate. This program, the first in a projected series, aims to address that problem--and does. One of the keys to this program's success is the narrator, a middle-aged man who speaks directly to viewers in a friendly, non-condescending tone. Beginning with the letter "B", and moving in non-sequential fashion through the other 25 letters of the alphabet, the narrator builds from the foundation of recognizing certain letters in words up to the various tricky dipthongs and silent letters of the English language by the end of two hours. The pacing is perfect, and the overall architecture of the program is a joy to behold. Much of the credit goes to Dr. Anabel P. Newman, Director of the Reading Practicum Center at Indiana University, a nationally recognized figure in the field of reading skills. Already favorably reviewed by the top literacy associations in the country, we gladly add our highest recommendation to the list. (See SITTING IN LIMBO for availability.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
