From the snappy opening titles to the cleverly edited segments, this video is a fascinating look at how computer technology works in our world in a variety of applications. The three related segments, articulately narrated by "real" teenagers, show top scientists and technology experts working together with kids in real-life circumstances. The first, "Mission to Planet Earth," presents data gathered by NASA scientists at work in classrooms, mapping the environment in detailed, 3-D forms that traditional maps and graphs could never approach. Next, "Digital Dinosaurs" melds art and science as the designers of the smash feature film Jurassic Park work with paleontologists to create the realistic and terrifying stars of the movie. The last, "Visualizing the Environment," uses huge amounts of data to create stunning computer imagery, which is then used to simulate planetary conditions. With its quick cuts, high energy, interesting camera angles, relevant topics, and host James Wilder (of TV's Melrose Place), The Digital Environment is sure to capture students' attention and hold it. The other titles in the series are: Science and the Seas, Making a Difference, and Backyard Wilderness. Especially motivational and inspiring for kids who already show interest and promise in science-related fields, this series is an excellent addition to any science curriculum. (E. Gieschen)
