Hosted by consumer advocates from the Better Business Bureau of Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada, this sequel to North American Scam Alert (VL-1/07) covers more of the latest scams aimed at consumers and businesses in North America. Social networks such as MySpace and Facebook are not just places for stalkers, but have also become a fertile ground for I.D. thieves to harvest personal information (some kids have posted their bank pin numbers in order to loan a friend a few bucks to see a movie, and were later surprised to find their bank accounts compromised). Debit and credit card skimming is another threat, with crooks using rigged card readers to capture information. Other frauds covered here include unscrupulous home movers, false health products, “green washing” (misrepresenting a product or service as eco-friendly), condo sales, and work-at-home scams (one involving reviewing movies!). In each of these cases, viewers are offered tips for self-defense against the profiled fraudsters. A helpful how-to that is sure to be of interest in an age of increasing electronic and online crime, this is recommended. Aud: P. (C. Block)
