With an estimated average of 1,000 laptop computers stolen per day in 2000, laptop computer security is a somewhat pressing (not to mention costly) issue for individuals and businesses who, in most cases, lose not only an expensive piece of technology when a thief strikes, but also PowerPoint presentations, databases full of valuable and often sensitive information, and personal profiles (passwords, etc.) that can be used to target credit card accounts and more. In this basic production, viewers will learn how to store and secure their laptops at the office (75% of all thefts occur at work) and on the road (airports are a popular pick-up spot), where locked drawers, or placing ubiquitously recognized laptop carrying cases inside, say, a sports bag, can seriously help deter theft. Combining host commentary with dramatic re-enactments, the program serves up solid tips and suggestions during the first half, before examining a half dozen commercial security products (including stand-alone alarm systems and hidden software programs) that can help stop a thief in his or her tracks and greatly aid in eventual recovery. While a wee bit pricey for a "how-to," the program's potential for averting major losses with laptop computers and their contents makes this a worthwhile title to consider. Recommended. Aud: P. (R.
