Epidemic? Isn't that a strong word? Perhaps not, when you consider that the majority of the American population is overweight, and that one in four Americans are technically considered obese. This excellent, straight-shooting video thoroughly explores this disturbing trend, covering definitions, causes, and treatments, and maintaining a good balance between sensitivity and frankness (obesity is not castigated, but neither is it simply accepted). Although there are genetic reasons for obesity, most cases stem from eating too much, exercising too little, and being too sedentary. Much of the latter half of the program offers solid, common-sense advice for losing weight (as well as contact information for professional support), examining the facts about nutrition and exercise, and underscoring the importance of changing thinking patterns and habits that trap people into cycles of unhealthy behavior (did you know that as little as one can of soda per day can increase the likelihood of obesity by 60%?). The well-paced, informative script combined with skillful editing makes this an outstanding resource (if being shown to a younger audience, however, educators should be aware that there are a few images worth noting: a baby breastfeeding, a young famine victim's body, and a close-up of stomach surgery). Highly recommended. Aud: J, H, C, P. (E. Gieschen)
