Because of the craft's light weight and ease of mobility, kayaks are ideal for single persons, making otherwise inaccessible waterways accessible. As a result, the sport of kayaking is enjoying considerable growth. This video will help beginning enthusiasts in learning various paddling and rescue techniques and safety/planning skills. Experts and instructors like Olympic medalist Greg Barton explain and demonstrate skills such as the forward sweep, brace, draw stroke, J lean, and various rescues (tandem, self and group) in this well-produced, fast-paced program. Animation interlaced with live-action demonstrations and underwater videography are used to teach specific skills. The final section on navigation and trip preparation is pretty vague and very brief, but there is some excellent information on paddling through waves, making difficult channel crossings, handling tail and cross-winds and signaling for help when in distress. If you buy one video on sea kayaking, make it this one. Highly recommended. (J. Scholtz)
