Yes! More guitar instruction videos. Ignoring the ludicrous titles (Jimi Hendrix was not made in a day), these two programs for learning the guitar are quality productions with sound instruction. Steve Ross, a guitarist who has played with Men at Work, the Beach Boys, and Stevie Nicks, among others, is the host and instructor for both programs. Basics offers viewers an overview of the guitar and its parts, a tune-up session, right-hand picking techniques, chords and chord progression, and some introductory rock tips. Best of all, viewers don't learn how to play "House of the Rising Sun." Instead, the choices include: "Wild Thing," "Amazing Grace," "Bye Bye Love," "Me And Bobby McGee," and more. Some are demonstrated on the tape, others are included in the 50-plus page booklet that accompanies the tape. Rock begins with a reference to the previous tape (Basics), and then looks at the different kinds of electric guitars, amps, and effects generators available, before launching into extensive demonstrations of bar chording and soloing techniques. Songs to learn include: "Born to Be Wild," "Purple Haze," "White Room," "Come Together," and "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)," among others. If you need more tapes in this area, both of these programs are highly recommended. [Xebec Productions also has a pair of well-reviewed piano playing videos available: Play the Piano Overnight and Play the Blues Overnight, both 1987 productions.] (Available from: Library Associates, 8845 W. Olympic Blvd., Suite 205, Beverly Hills, CA 90211.)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
